[ABC Radio Australia News, 14 January 2011] - Papua New Guinea's parliament has elected a new Governor General.
The ruling National Alliance party's favoured candidate, Michael Ogio, has overwhelmingly defeated the opposition's nomination, Sir Pato Kakaraya, by 65 votes to 23.
Radio Australia reporters in Port Moresby say parliament was adjourned until May the 10th immediately after Mr Ogio's was elected.
The new Governor General won't be sworn in until then.
Parliament was forced to elect a new head of state after the Supreme Court in December annulled Sir Paulias Matane's reappointment.
